Warsaw Siren Photo: Warsaw Siren

Warsaw siren - the symbol of the city of Warsaw, on the emblem of the city. The first image of the siren appeared in 1390. Then Serena was quite different: with the legs of the bird and body of a dragon. In 1459, the picture has changed: the bird's feet changed to fishtail, the human body and bird legs with sharp claws.

It is believed that the adoption of this coat of arms was a tribute to medieval fashion, which recommended to select cities in the characters of mythical creatures. There is an urban legend about the appearance of mermaids:

Long ago, sailed from the Atlantic ocean to the Baltic sea by two sisters sirens, beautiful women with fish tails, living in the depths of the seas. One of them caught in Danish waters, was left sitting on a rock at the entrance to the port of Copenhagen. The second sister arrived to the shores of gdaƄsk, and then found himself in the waters of the Vistula river and swam to the Old town. A rich merchant, hearing the beautiful singing mermaid, caught it for profit. He embraced her in a wooden shed with no access to water. A wailing siren heard the young son of a fisherman and night released the mermaid. Siren in gratitude for the fact that people defended her, promised if necessary to defend Warsaw. That's why the siren is armed with her sword and shield to defend the city.

Currently in the Polish capital, you can see two monuments Serena. The sculpture is installed on the market square of the Old town and is the work of sculptor Constantin Hegel. The second monument is situated on the promenade close to the tamok valley. This sculpture was created by Ludwig Kochavim in 1939.
