Art gallery located in the heart of New Zealand's capital - Wellington - in the Park of Kivik SQUAR. Opened in 1980, the Gallery has played a huge role in the development of Wellington as the capital. Its current building, the Gallery was occupied only in 1993.
In 2009 was made a full reconstruction of the building, which lasted a whole year. During the reconstruction in the Gallery were open three more buildings, including a hall for exhibition of art objects, Maori and Pacific peoples, as well as a new auditorium for lectures. In September 2009, the Gallery was re-opened to the public. First after the reconstruction, the collection became a personal exhibition of the famous Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.
The feature of the Gallery is that it does not have its own permanent collection. There is always exhibited different works, United by one theme. Also here you can see the solo exhibition of internationally renowned artists such as Keith Haring, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Tracey Emin, Sidney Nolen, Bridget Riley, Stanley Spencer and many others. Also in the Gallery of his personal exhibitions conducted at new Zealand masters: Rita Agnes, Sheng cotton, bill Hammond, Laurence Aberhart, Ralph Chater, Tony Fomison, etc.
In addition to visits of tourists Gallery is hosting a group of students in primary and secondary schools in the education programme throughout New Zealand. In addition to the standard events for the students, the teacher can choose the subjects and the course of the training students in the Gallery. As it regularly hosts lectures, workshops, meetings and discussions.
In 1998, the Art Gallery has organized its own Fund, to enter which can be anyone. Each Fund has its advantages, the area of which depends on the level of membership.
For those who want to relax and eat, in the Gallery there is a small cozy cafe Nikau Gallery Cafe, located on the first floor, in the open air.
