Cathedral of St. Gregory the Illuminator – the largest temple located in the territory of Yerevan. Along with the Cathedral Sameba in Tbilisi it is considered the largest in Transcaucasia.

St. Gregory the Illuminator was built to commemorate the 1,700 th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity by Armenia. This temple is a place to store relics, which is connected with Gregory the Illuminator. They were brought here from Naples.

The construction of the Cathedral began in 1997, the Initiator of its construction was Karekin I. the architect of the temple was made by S. Kurkjian. In September 2001, was held the ceremony of consecration of the Cathedral.

Cathedral complex consists of three churches - the Church of St. Tiridates, the Church of the Holy Queen Ashkhen and the Cathedral. The main temple complex was built on the donations of family Alek Manukyan. Financing the construction of two other churches were doing family Gevorgyan and Nazareno. The construction of the belfry was funded Eduardo Eurnekian. The total area is approximately 3822 square meters, the height of the Cathedral from the ground to the top of the cross is 54 m

Geometric forms, strong outlines and characteristic for the Cathedral restrained colours make the building unique. Inside the Cathedral is very bright and spacious, wall paintings are missing, the icons are very small, on the walls and ceiling arches and niches. A little oblong and narrow Windows are decorated with beautiful stained glass Windows.
