The best starting point for exploring the Sakhalin – Sakhalin regional Museum. The Museum building was built in 1937 in the traditional Japanese style "taken zukuri" (Imperial crown) for the Museum of the governorship of Karafuto during the capture of the island by the Japanese. After the Second World War and the liberation of South Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, the Museum was nationalized by the Soviet Union and opened as a Museum of local lore.
The Museum is the custodian of the history of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. Museum displays rare collections of objects of culture of the Sakhalin indigenous: Nivkh, Ainu, Uilta (Orok), paleontological collections of original documents, photographs and items that reflect the complex history of the region in XIX-XX centuries. Represented departments: Zoology, Ethnography, mining, agricultural, prison-technical.Visit the Museum annually about 70 thousand tourists.The Museum provides the following services: lectures, thematic, sightseeing and field trips.
