The Palace of al-Husn, known also under the name "White Fort", is one of the main attractions of Abu Dhabi, which is visited annually by thousands of tourists. This is the oldest structure, the first mention of which dates back to the year 1703, was the beginning of the formation of the city.
A small Fort with white walls was built by immigrants from the Libyan tribe of the Beni Yas in place of the fresh source. These walls were supposed to protect dug inside the well from the enemy. Over time, around the well was built, this large fortress with high walls. In addition to the protective functions of the fortress was to serve as the future residence of the rulers of Abu Dhabi. The city began to develop, and around the old fortress has many new buildings.
During the XIX – XX centuries a source of income for the inhabitants of the fortress of al-Husn were different areas of activity, ranging from Maritime trade and ending with the production and sale of oil, which led to the emergence of the big city.
The residence of the Sheikh's Palace al-Husn was until 1966. From 1976 to 1983 was undergoing a complete reconstruction of the Palace. Now this representative of the historical heritage is part of the Museum complex and since 2007 is fully open to visitors. Previously was allowed only a walk under the city walls and a visit to the observation tower.
In the Palace opened the Center for documentation and research, which compiled major archive for the study of ancient documents and objects. Housed in the Museum complex exhibits recreate the real picture of life of the population of this region. In the collection of the famous library of al-Husn, there are over two million books.
