Souvala is a resort town on the North coast of the picturesque Greek island of Aegina. He is about 9-10 km from the homonymous capital of the island and is the second largest settlement of Aegina.
The settlement existed here in ancient times and was called Eeyore. The modern name of the city comes from the word "souvala," which means an artificial reservoir for storing water, usually open. Similar structures carved into rocks, and probably used as thermal baths were discovered on the Eastern outskirts of the city, near the mineral spring "Terma". This is one of the most famous healing springs of Europe has been known since antiquity and is recommended in the treatment of arthritis, rheumatism, skin diseases, gastrointestinal tract, etc. unfortunately, currently located here, the hospital is closed.
During the period when the capital of the island was Paleochora (end of 9th – beginning of the 19th century), Souvala was the main harbour of the island. After the capital was the city of Aegina, located on the coast and has an excellent harbour, the port of Souvala gradually lost its strategic importance and by the middle of the last century Souvala has become a small fishing village.
The rapid development in recent decades has transformed Souvala second largest port of Aegina and a very popular resort, while retaining the unique atmosphere of traditional villages. The main life of the city in the summer is concentrated in the waterfront district. Here you will find a number of excellent restaurants, taverns and cafes (many with sea view), where you can relax and enjoy delicious local cuisine. Available in Souvala and a good selection of hotels and apartments.
Near the harbour is a good city beach. However, a number of good beaches you will find in the surrounding area of Souvala, most of them are relatively shallow and have a sandy bottom. Specific wind, characteristic of the Northern coast of Aegina, creates ideal conditions for Windsurfing.
