Fatehpur Sikri Photo: Fatehpur Sikri

A real "Ghost town" called Fatehpur Sikri is located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, in the North of the country. It was built in the early 1500's by order of the Emperor Maharana Sangram Singh, better known as Rana Sanga about the ancient city of Sikri, and was originally called Siregar. And its new name "Fatehpur", which means "city of victory", he received after the Mughal Emperor Akbar conquered it from Rana Sanga.

In 1571 Akbar made Fatehpur Sikri, the capital of the state, and began to upset him. While in the city there are many beautiful buildings, palaces and mosques. At the request of the Emperor, they were all made in the Persian style, thus he "paid tribute" to his famous ancestor Tamerlane. But still, due to the fact that the construction involved various architects and craftsmen from all over the country, in the architecture of the city brought much from the culture of India, this is especially noticeable in small details and decorations. Almost every building is made of red Sandstone, which was very common in that country, but later some of the buildings were reconstructed with the use of white marble as the main building material. Unfortunately, the status of the capital belonged to the city does not last long, in 1571 1585 year. Fatehpur Sikri was abandoned because of lack of water therein.

Fatehpur Sikri is a magnificent place, whose length is 3 km, width 1 km. On three sides it is enclosed by a 11 km long high wall, in which a total of nine gates, and on the fourth side in the time of Akbar was a large lake. In the city almost every building is a work of art. The main building of the city is the Palace complex, home to the Emperor. It consists of several separate pavilions set in a geometrically strict order. You can also highlight Boland the Darvaz – the "gateway" to the city with a height of 54 meters, JAMA Masjid, or Friday Mosque, the tomb of Salim Chist – a Sufi Saint, after the blessing is believed to be at Akbar had a son, Saleem, better known in history as Jahangir, the Diwan-I-AAM hall for public meetings, the Diwan-I-Khas – hall for private meetings, beautiful Palace of Mariam-uz-Zamani – personal rooms of the wives of the great Emperor and many others.
