Natural Park Ukok ("Ukok quiet Zone") is one of the natural attractions of the Altai. The natural Park is located in the southern part of the Ukok plateau amidst a picturesque rocky mountains at the junction of Russian, Kazakh, Chinese and Mongolian borders.

The Park was founded in August 1994 as a nature reserve "quiet Zone Ukok" and in may 2005, a specially protected natural territory of Russia was restored by the type of the natural Park. After three years of "quiet Zone Ukok" and other areas have been included in the world heritage list by the UNESCO as a natural site under the name "Golden mountains of Altai". The total area of the natural Park is 2 542 sq. km.

The main purpose of the Park is the protection of the natural environment, rare species of animals and plants, sustainable use of recreation potential of the Ukok plateau.

In modern natural Park there are three functional areas. The first area of 26800 ha is a reserved zone, which prohibits any recreational and economic use of the territory. The second zone, with an area 39200 ha - area of restricted use, providing the conditions of preservation of historical and cultural monuments, natural systems, with limited business activities. The third zone is a recreational zone with a total area of more than 186903 ha, in which you can maintain a regulated natural Park tourism, sightseeing and business activities.

The Ukok plateau became most famous after it was found Scythian barrows of ancient burials and many other objects of ancient culture that are unique archaeological value.

The natural climate of the Park is characterized by low humidity and extreme continental. Here is one of the centres of endemism of flora and fauna. Natural area "Ukok" is the object of recreational, scientific, historical, ecological and cultural values not only in Russia but all over the world.
