Museum Amsterdam is a Museum telling about the history of the capital of the Netherlands. Until 2011 he was called the Museum of the history of Amsterdam.

The Museum opened in 1926 and originally housed in the former city of the Weighing chamber. In 1975, the Museum moved to another historic building – the former orphanage at the monastery of Saint Lucien. The house was built in 1580 by the famous Dutch architect Hendrick de Keyser and his son Peter. The shelter was housed in this building until 1960. Hundreds of children left without parents, were able to receive shelter, care and education. The boys could study in urban schools and to get some sort of profession, girls were taught home Economics at the shelter. Now the Museum has an interactive exhibit for children about the life of a shelter in the XVII century.

The Museum has numerous exhibits telling about the life and history of the city, its past, present and future. In 2011, in the Museum, there were 70 000 units. They include paintings, layouts, and archaeological finds, and photos. Collected here are as simple items of everyday life, and works of decorative-applied art – furniture, dishes, jewelry, figurines.

Many of the exhibits you can touch and try out, are interactive tours. Besides the permanent exhibition the Museum also hosts various exhibitions.

The Museum is the gallery of the City watch – covered street, which is an art gallery. This is one of the few free street galleries in the world where you can see paintings from 1530 to 2007.
