Bridge La Margineda is an ancient artificial structure, which is a magnificent monument of medieval engineering architecture and one of the most interesting historical and architectural sights of Andorra. Medieval bridge, built across the main river of the country - Valira, is located in the district of Andorra La Vella, in the small village of La Margineda, on the spot where once was the mountain "Royal road", which connected the Andorra La Vella and the community of Sant Julia de Loria.
This stone bridge, built in the Romanesque style, has an interesting history. La Margineda was built in the XII century and today is the largest, while the narrowest and most well-preserved bridge of its kind in the territory of Andorra.
The bridge is a austere arch, thrown over the river Valira. The length of the arch is 33 meters. The total height of this medieval building – 9, 2 meters. The width of the bridge from one side reaches 5, 3 meter, with the other 7, 8 meters, and in the narrowest place is only 2, 5 meters. La Margineda was made of stone cobbles and special cement mortar. On both banks of the Valira built two stone pillars connecting the spans of the bridge in the form of semicircular arches. Closer to the center of the bridge rises and thins, so the middle of the stone bridge is located slightly above the supports and it is the thinnest part. Based on photographs from the early twentieth century, the bridge has not undergone any serious changes.
During the construction of the bridge was not provided any decorative elements, the main purpose of its construction were durability, reliability and solidity.
Near the bridge of La Margineda is a modern monument placed in honor of the First Congress of the Catalan language and literature. The monument, consisting of two arches, symbolizes the past and future of the country. The author of this work was made by the Valencian sculptor Vicenc of Alfaro.
Bridge La Margineda is a cultural heritage of Andorra and one of the most popular attractions of the country.
