Demidov compound Photo: Demidov compound

Since ancient times, Astrakhan, standing on a major water trade route (the Volga river), was both a shopping centre and a transit point for trade caravans moving to the South and East. Large amount of cash has forced merchants to build not just individual warehouses (warehouses) or shops, and big quarters-yards, known as "compound". One such "trade and warehouse" Demidov called the farmstead.

Demidov's compound was built in the late XVII century on the Bank of Kutum on red promenade near the Tent-shaped towers in White city of Astrakhan. Owned a farmstead known merchant Demidovs-Loshkareva, namesakes of the famous Demidov dynasty. In 1722-1723, trading house Demidov has provided a valuable service to Peter the great in the Persian campaign. Merchant Demidov was a monopolist in the production of cores and guns for the army and Navy under Peter. In the eighteenth century farmstead were further supplemented with special living quarters.

The General layout of the compound in the form of a square is not typical for Central Russia - the influence of other regions. Other farmstead, built in Astrakhan (Indian, Persian, Armenian, Tatar), built in an Asian style-type caravanserais. Visible signs of this style and in Demidov compound (for example, yard bunk galleries, narrow window openings from the outside, arched lockable gates). The old part of the building is open to tourists only on the courtyard side. The outside facade of the monastery is a little different from the usual dwellings of the era of classicism. Embankment near the farmstead, stone-faced. There once were quite active loading and unloading.

Compound Astrakhan and today will be interesting for curious tourists.
