Photo: Monastery of St Simeon
Near the mausoleum of the Aga Khan ruins of an ancient Coptic monastery of St Simeon. The monastery was built in the VI century and lasted until the twelfth century. The fortress-monastery served the monks protection from robbers and Bedouins. Eight walls had a stone Foundation and brick top. Despite such an impressive building, in 1173, the monastery was destroyed by the Muslims and has since been in ruins. In the monastery Church are ancient frescoes. And there you can see the caves, excavated in the rock, the cells of the first monks of the monastery.
