The theatre Museum in Athens was founded in 1938 by the Society of Greek dramatists. Head of the Museum was assigned to the famous Greek historian Yannis Sideris, specializing in the history of the development of theatrical art of Greece. Since 1977, the theatre Museum was housed on the ground floor of the Cultural center of Athens. The Museum also has educational and research centre of the Greek theatre.
Exposure of the Theatre Museum devoted contemporary Greek theatre, Opera, musical theatre and variety shows, ancient Greek drama and puppet theatre. Here you can see costumes and props theatrical scenery, personal belongings of the leading figures of the Greek theatre, scripts, photographs, posters and programmes of the 19th-20th centuries and more.
In addition to the exhibits the Museum has its own library, which houses 25,000 volumes of specialized literature and archives, including the unique ancient manuscripts of the 18th century, biographies of famous actors and various publications (criticism, interviews, reviews, articles about theatre, etc.), as well as an awesome collection of videos.
Collection of the Theatre Museum illustrates the history of the development of the Greek theatre and has a high artistic and historical value.
