Situated on the mountainside of Gimel, the monastery of kesariani was founded in the XI century. In the Middle ages the monastery was a center of learning, during the Turkish rule – the Orthodox center. For a long time the monastery was exempted from paying taxes to the Treasury and therefore flourished. In 1792, the monastery lost this privilege and gradually fell into decay. It often lived in the Athens Metropolitan, in addition, the monastery gave to their in the vicinity of Byzantine emperors and Ottoman sultans.
The main temple of the monastery – Church of the assumption, built around the year 1000. The Church walls were painted Athos masters of the sixteenth century, the frescoes date back to XVII century. The dome is supported by four ionic columns.
Near the monastery is the source of Aphrodite, the water of which, according to legend, cures for infertility. Water flowing from the fountain, designed in the form of a RAM's head.
Around the monastery there are walnut groves and cypress forests, and pine mountain slope with hives.
