Area Hours in Avignon called the heart of the city. The place de l'horloge is located in the historical part of the city and has existed since antiquity. During the reign of the Romans in the Roman forum, in the Middle ages it was a market square, and during the great French revolution had become a place of public executions.
The name of the square was due to chime that in the Middle ages were placed in the tower of the XV century Jacquemart. The tower is part of the complex of city hall (the town hall of the XIX century, built to replace the town hall of the XV century), and the clock is notable for moving figures on the dial and melodic chime that rings every hour.
Currently, the area has cafes and restaurants with outdoor terraces. Nearby is the building of the theatre of the nineteenth century. Colorful attribute of the Clock square is a carousel with horses, which invariably attracts the attention of children. Area Hours for their performances took a fancy to street performers – musicians, jugglers, clowns.
Every year in July, Avignon becomes the venue of Europe's oldest theatre festival which was founded by Jean Vilar, actor and Director, who founded Marseilles national folk theatre. The festival is held since 1947. During the festival, and scenic sites under the open sky become the town squares, including the Place de l'horloge. However, the main stage of the festival is the courtyard of the papal Palace, built in the XIV century, this place is recognized as one of the most prestigious European theatres.
That Avignon has ever been visited by many celebrities, show the surroundings of the square Hours – Windows of the houses on the surrounding streets of Moliere, Corneille and Mont painted them with fun portraits.
