Museum of Occidental, located in the city of Bacolod, is a mandatory stop on your journey on the Philippine island of Negros. Because here you can touch the island's rich history and its cultural heritage and to see the work of local artists. The Museum collection is divided into thematic exhibitions, exhibited in several galleries.
On the ground floor there is a Gallery of Folk Art and folk Toys, which holds over three thousand traditional toys collected not only on the island of Negros, but in other parts of the world. It is only in the Philippines collection of this kind. There is nothing surprising in the fact that this exhibition is very popular among children. By the way, for children, the Museum also has a Children's Library and Playground, where they can learn the basics of folk art – painting, sculpting, pottery.
On the second floor you can see a reconstruction of the "batil" - wooden vessel used for the carriage of passengers and cargo in the early 20th century. There are samples of goods, which in that era was carrying between Occidental and nearby Islands.
Among other interesting exhibits of the Museum collection about the sugar industry, "Iron Dinosaurs" - vintage steam locomotives, 50 boats, owned by different tribes of the island, artifacts depicting the life of the Chinese community in Occidental, etc. In one of the galleries to learn about the former governors of the island and about the mark they left in the history of the province and Bacolod. A separate exposition is devoted to Nicholas Loney, who almost single-handedly created the sugar industry in Negros, who later became one of the main sources of income of the island.
Museum of the Occidental was created in the early 1980-ies, however, own the building received only in 1996. The building itself is a historic landmark, it was built in the mid 1920's. On the project of building worked Leandro Locsin, one of the greatest architects of the Philippines. Immediately after the completion of construction, it was considered a masterpiece and decoration of Bacolod.
