Casa Calvet is a building, designed by Antoni gaudí for a textile manufacturer, which was intended for residence and business in the premises. The construction of the house Calvet was conducted from 1998 to the year 1900.
The house Calvet is a reflection of the two architectural styles of the time – Baroque and art Nouveau. The facade is tightly clamped between two adjacent facades of the houses and at first glance looks rather ordinary. But more thorough consideration emerges the original architecture typical of the author. Elements of the facade, it would seem at first glance, chaotic, actually have a special meaning and is thought by the author to the smallest details. So, on the first floor of the building the architect designed arches, pilasters between which are, in its original form resembling a textile bobbin. Above the entrance to the house is a Bay window on the second floor, which is supported by a refined, sculpted made bracket, main part of which is shown in the form of slender cypress, a symbol of Catalan hospitality. Also the first floor of the building is decorated with sculptural image of the letter "C" - first letter of the surname of the owner of the house, as well as images of the coat of arms of Catalonia, olive branch, horn of plenty of the fungus and relief, symbolizing the passion of the owner botany. Overall, the facade is symmetrical about its main axis vertical, the Bay Windows of the building are harmoniously combined with graceful balconies, creating a feeling of integrity of the entire architectural composition. Light textured stone of the facade, and extra long window and door openings and graceful wrought iron balconies and Bay Windows create an impression of openness and elegance of the whole building.
Noteworthy is the fact that in 1900, Casa Calvet received the prize of the municipality of Barcelona, as the best building of the year.
