The Casa Amalia Photo: The Casa Amalia

The Casa Amalia is one of the three most beautiful buildings of Barcelona in the art Nouveau style, located in the "Block of discord", named thus because of the large stylistic inconsistencies in the architecture of the buildings here. Two other well-known buildings, adjacent to the Casa Amalia is Casa batlló architect Antoni gaudí and Casa Lleo Morera architect Lluis-Monterey.

The building of the Casa Amalia was redesigned by the architect Josep Puig-I-Cadafalch. In 1898, the house was purchased by the family of a pastry chef Antonio Amalie, and the famous master modernist Puig-and-Katafalk carried out alterations to the now famous mansion, its artistic design and finish, which were completed by 1900.

This luxurious house with an extraordinary façade intertwined several architectural styles. The author applies the methods of Catalan Gothic architecture, which coexist with Flemish and Byzantine stylistic elements.

Extraordinary beauty of the arch, stepped gable, entrance, having two openings of different size, wrought iron items, and superbly executed original bas-reliefs decorating the facade, – all this gives the building a unique and luxurious look.

From 1960 to the present upper floors of the building is the Institute of Spanish art, in the part of the premises is a large library. The first floor has a lovely shop selling chocolate.

Decree of 9 January 1976, the mansion, once owned Antonio Amalie, given the title of the Catalan national historical monument.
