The Gothic quarter Photo: the Gothic quarter

The Gothic quarter in Barcelona is the oldest part of the city: here was a Roman settlement of Barcino. The main attraction of the Gothic quarter is the Cathedral.

In the XV century there were built the city hall and the Catalan government. The hall was later rebuilt, but the side of the building remained part of the Gothic decoration with the coat of arms of Barcelona. At the entrance to the town hall set up two monuments – Jaume I, in the XIII century and established in Barcelona city Council, and J. Peveler, made in the XVI century court nobility to pay taxes. Opposite the town hall is the Palace of the government of Catalonia. The facade was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. Above the main entrance is adorned with a statue of the patron Saint of Catalonia, Saint George defeating the dragon. Noteworthy Gothic chapel of Sant Jordi, wonderful Orange courtyard and the bell tower of the XVI century. Here's the President of Catalonia.

The Royal Palace was built in the XIII century as the residence of the counts of Barcelona. In the magnificent hall of Tinel, the specimen of the Gothic of the fourteenth century, king Ferdinand and Queen Isabella received Columbus returned from swimming. Later it became the seat of his Holiness the Tribunal.

The house Canon is the only Gothic building of the XI century, built on a Roman Foundation. The building was built for the almshouse, where he arranged meals for the city poor, in 1450, the house passed the Canon (one of the clergy) of the Church. Now this is the residence of the President of Catalonia.

The house of the archdeacon is built on the Foundation of the building of the XII century, and later a gallery was added and a small courtyard with a fountain. Now here is the archive. At the gates is a funny mailbox, decorated with carved images of swallows, symbolizing the hope for a quick answer, and a turtle, symbolizing the pace of delivery of letters.

Worthy of attention and two of the Museum's Gothic quarter: the city history Museum and Museum of sculptor Frederic Mares.
