The Church of the Holy spirit in Bern was built in the period from 1726 to 1729, the ruins of which were here earlier Church Spitaliere belonging to the monastery of St. Spirit. The temples were built on this spot since the arrival of Christianity in these lands. There are records that indicate the existence there of other churches in the period from 1482 1228 and years. It is also known that during the construction works in 1726 were found the material objects, confirming this fact.
The Church Of St. The spirit was built under the direction of Niklaus Schiltknecht and Daniel Sturley, and with the participation of the Hungarian master John of Palusa Nader. The building was made of local Sandstone. The temple can accommodate more than 2,000 members and is one of the largest Protestant churches in the whole of Switzerland.
By the time of the ancient elements of the Church has preserved only the bell was hoisted on the new belfry. Some historians suggest that prior to the reformation the Church belonged to the monastery, but the written evidence that has survived. Today it is on the list of the country's best examples of architectural art of the Renaissance.
The Church building is designed in the Baroque style. When you enter inside catches the eye is arched colonnade, which, though visually reduces the internal space, but did not harm the beauty of the interior of the temple. For those times such a circular gallery was new and unusual, especially for the Church. In the gallery you can see an amazing stucco ornament.
