City hall in białystok – the building in late Baroque style, located on Kosciuszko square. The construction of the town Hall began in 1745 at the expense of patron and crown Hetman Jan Clement Branicki. The work was conducted under the project of Polish architect John Henry terminal for 16 years. The town Hall was completed in 1761, but it never became the seat of the city administration. High tower was used by city firefighters to monitor the city. In the lower buildings worked a variety of shops, artisan shops, workshops, studios and clothing stores for the wealthy. In total, located in the town Hall over 120 commercial establishments, most of which were owned by Jews.
During the Second world war the town Hall was almost completely destroyed, restoration work began in 1954 and lasted until 1958. An architect was appointed Christine Hojnacki. After the completion of restoration works, in September 1958, moved into the building the city Museum, which previously was located in one of the city's palaces. After the move, the Museum was expanded in the town Hall was opened an art Studio, as well as ethnographic laboratory.
Today, Museum visitors can see many historical artifacts and discover the history of creation and development of białystok.
In 2008 a group of students and postgraduates of the University in Bialystok in the town Hall was opened an exhibition dedicated to Jewish heritage in the city. The aim of the project is to introduce visitors and residents of the city with the contribution made by the Jews in the economic and cultural development of białystok.
