Braganza, the capital of the eponymous district, was founded in 1187. This ancient city, which is located in the North of Portugal, is one of the most studied cities in the country, and one of the most interesting because of its architectural monuments.
The citadel of bragança, built in the XII century, is one of the most impressive monuments. The fortress, like the city, is named after the Celtic goddess of victory, Brigantia.
Surrounded by thick fortress walls of the citadel was built in 1130 Fernand Mendes, the matchmaker of king Alfonso Henriques. In 1187 inside the D. Sancho I built a castle with towers and a donjon, which was later fortified by king joão I. the Citadel consists of 15 towers and 4 gates.
Near the castle is one of the famous towers of the tower of the Princess. According to the legend, this tower was locked, the wife of the Duke of Braganca, Donna Leonora, which the Duke was suspected of treason and then was killed.
In the Central part of the Domus Municipalis city hall in the five-pointed star, the only remaining monument of Romanesque architecture in Portugal. Domus Municipalis is the only building of this form not only in Portugal but also in Europe. In the building were recently renovated.
Also on site is the Church of St. Mary, the granite portal, which surprises with its intricate carvings. Inside draws attention vaulted painted ceiling of cylindrical shape, which is typical of the architecture of some churches of Braganca in the eighteenth century.
Worth to mention is that one tower of the citadel, Torri di Managen which now houses a military Museum.
