The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Brest has a different name – brotherly St. Nicholas Church. This Church is not very long, but very dramatic history, is inseparable from the history of Brest.

When in 1830 it was decided ancient 500-year-old Brest move to a new location, the old city was destroyed, began construction of the new town, which was named Brest-Litovsk. Built from scratch: houses, workshops, markets, shops and temples are also built. Churches in the new Brest-Litovsk was built on the donations of the faithful, who had still his own money to rebuild their homes.

In 1885, the Orthodox brotherhood of Brest-Litovsk had built a beautiful Church made of wood. Urban rumor so she was called – Church of the brethren. During the burst in 1895 a fire destroyed half the town, and with it the brotherly St. Nicholas Church.

It was decided to build a new stone Church of St. Nicholas, which began to collect donations. To the sacred cause helped money two Orthodox brotherhood of St. Nicholas and Athanasius of Brest. The temple began to donate money to the seafarers and families of seafarers, because Saint Nicholas is the patron Saint of sailors. Especially a lot of donations from the families of the victims began to arrive with the beginning of the Russo-Japanese war in 1904.

The construction of the Church began in 1903, however, the money is still not enough. Then the remaining amount was made by the Emperor Nicholas II. Russian Tsar also gave the Church a list of the dead sailors of the Pacific fleet for eternal remembrance.

The Church of St. Nicholas was consecrated on 6 December 1906. Its architecture was influenced by the sailors. She looks like a huge ship. Blue its domes similar to sea waves. The Church is performed in the pseudo-Russian style (imitation of the Moscow style of the XVII century).

The Church was not closed until 1961, when the USSR began a widespread struggle with religion. Until 1989 in the Mykolaiv Church was located in city archive. After much debate and many requests, the Church was returned to believers. The Church was completely restored in 1996.
