The construction of the Church of the virgin Mary in the early Gothic style was begun under king Bela IV (1255– 1269). To this period belongs the North tower. When Lajos I Great were built by the South gate, called the gate of Mary, and later, when Sigismund and Matthias, who twice got married in the Church so the Church is often called the Matthias Church.), was added to the South bell tower with a coat of arms depicting a Raven. In Turkish times it was used as a mosque.

The frescoes in the Church of Matthias made by Bertalan Székely and Karoly LatAm. In the chapel of Loreto is the legendary marble sculpture of the Madonna of the XVI century. In the chapel of the Holy Trinity in 1862 in a richly decorated sarcophagus were buried the remains of king béla III and his wife Anna Chatillon, was found in 1848 in Szekesfehervar.
