The basis of the richest collections of the Museum of fine arts formed an extensive collection of paintings of the esterházy family. The Museum presents works of art from ancient times to the present day.

The Museum is divided into eight departments: Egyptian Art, Antique, Sculpture Baroque, Old Masters, Drawings and Engravings, Masters of the nineteenth century, the master of twentieth century and Contemporary Sculpture. The great names associated with the old masters – Tiepolo, Tintoretto, Veronese, Titian, Raphael, van Dyck, Brueghel, Rembrandt, Rubens, Hals, Hogarth, Durer, Cranach, Holbein, Goya, Velasquez, El Greco and other artists, whose works are housed in the Museum. Among the French painters of the nineteenth century is better represented by Delacroix, Corot and Manet. The Museum often hosts temporary exhibitions.
