Basilica of Santo niño, located in Cebu city, the capital of the island, is the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines. The construction of the Church began in 1565, under the guidance of the monk-augustina Andres de Urdaneta. According to the legend, the place for the building of the Basilica was not chosen by chance – it was here, in the center of the current Cebu, the Spaniards in 1565 find a picture of Baby Jesus brought to the island by Ferdinand Magellan a few decades earlier.
The first Basilica was built of clay and wood. In 1735 the Governor of the province of Cebu Fernando Valdes Therehe ordered to build a new building, this time of stone. The building was completed in 1739. Architectural feature of the Church was an organic combination of the three styles of Muslim, Romanesque and neo-classical. Two centuries later, in 1965, during the celebration of the 400-hundredth anniversary of Christianization of the Philippines, Pope Paul VI gave the Church the status of "minor Basilica". So far, the Basilica of Santo Nino is in the possession of the order of Saint Augustine.
Inside the Church organized a small Museum dedicated to the history of the Christianization of Cebu island. Here you can see Antiques, including antique furniture, vestments of priests, statues and other things. Interesting part of the Museum collection are numerous toys given as gifts to Baby Jesus.
Today to visit the Basilica of Santo niño come not only faithful, but also tourists. In order to accommodate all the visitors to the churchyard was built the so-called "pilgrimage center".
