Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Cebu, located in the capital city of the eponymous province. The construction of the Cathedral began in 1689 and lasted many years due to interruptions caused by lack of funding and other unforeseen circumstances. Once the money allocated for the construction of the Cathedral, were spent on the fight against Moro pirates. Another time the construction of the Cathedral was interrupted because of the death of Bishop supervised the construction. In 1786 was ready in just a facade, and the consecration of the Cathedral took place in 1940 – 250 years after the start of construction.

The architecture of the Cathedral is typical of churches of the Spanish colonial period – a squat building with thick walls that can withstand typhoons and other natural disasters. On the facade you can see the pediment in the form of a Shamrock, decorated with carved floral motifs, the inscription "Jesus Christ" and a pair of griffins. Above the main entrance stands the Spanish Royal coat of arms, symbolizing the contribution of the Spanish monarchy in the construction of the Cathedral.

During the Second World war most of the Cathedral was destroyed in the bombing of the city by the allies, were forever lost century-old archives of the bishopric. Survived only the bell tower, built in 1835, the façade and walls. The rest of the Church was restored in the 1950-ies. In 1982, at the initiative of Archbishop Julio Rosales near the sacristy was built the mausoleum in which now lie the remains of the bishops and clergy of Cebu. In 2009, in the Cathedral underwent extensive restoration work, and the Vatican sent the request to give the Cathedral the status of "minor Basilica" in honor of the Christian Martyr Saint Vitali. A day of worship this Holy coincides with the day when 450 years ago in Cebu was found the image of the Baby Jesus.
