The monastery of the Holy Trinity (Agia Triada), also known as the monastery of Zagaroli, is one of the most impressive monasteries of Crete. This Greek Orthodox monastery is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula in the North of the Prefecture of Chania (15 km from Chania).
The history of the monastery of the Holy Trinity begins in the 17th century. Previously on the site of the monastery housed a small ancient Church, which went into decline after the death of the last monk. The monastery's main temple is a domed structure in which the Byzantine style is perfectly combined with columns of the ionic and Corinthian styles.
The founders of the monastery are two brothers, Jeremiah and Laurentius, of the revered Venetian family of Zagaroli. The brothers were well educated, owned by Latin and versed in the architecture, including the European. In 1645, after the conquest of Chania by the Turks, the monastery was suspended. During this period it is known as "the monastery with cypresses". The monastery has a library that houses rare books, there is a Museum with an interesting collection of icons and manuscripts.
