The armolia Photo: Armolia

The armolia is a small village in a picturesque valley in the southern part of Chios, which existed here in the middle Ages. However, in contrast to the colorful Pyrgi, Kalamoti, the Place, the tea and other settlements of Chios, which until now has preserved many beautiful architectural monuments of the middle ages, Armolia was largely rebuilt. The armolia is about 20 km from the capital of the island of Chios town (Chora) and 2 km from the settlement of Kalamoti.

Although the settlement is located in the famous Mastichochoria (the area has long been known plantations mastic trees, the resin of which is unique), Armolia primarily renowned as a center of pottery of Chios. Of course, the locals were engaged in the cultivation of mastic, but pottery which has for centuries been passed down from generation to generation, and today is the trademark of Armaii. Original products from handmade ceramics (vases, jugs, cups, plates, jewelry, etc.) you can purchase in local shops as a souvenir. You can also visit the fascinating master class on production of ceramics.

Atop a picturesque hill overlooking the Armolia, is the main local attraction is the Byzantine fortress of apolichnon. Here, during the rule of the island by the Genoese, was the administration of Mastichochoria. It is also worth visiting the main temple of the village - the Church of Saint Demetrios Church and Church of the virgin Mary, which still has a magnificent carved iconostasis Dating back to the year 1774 (both churches are located in the Central square of Armaii). Interesting and close to Armolia the life-giving spring monastery, built in the late 18th century.
