Armenian Church of the Holy virgin - one of the main attractions of Chisinau, which is in the historic centre of the city.

The date of the founding of the Church call 1804. There is an opinion that it was erected on the site of the old Moldavian Church, burned by fire in 1739 during the Russo-Turkish war. A new Church was built in the means of the Armenian Baron Hovhannes, the son of Alphana and other wealthy members of the Armenian community. The names of all sponsors are listed on a memorial plaque above the entrance to the temple. The author of the project architect and was made by the famous architect - Vardanyan from Yass.

The architectural plan of the Church of the Holy virgin is a single-nave building with a semicircular apse, which on the West side joins bell tower with a hipped roof. Classic features of Armenian sacred architecture can be traced in Lancet arches, decorative columns and capitals. Walls and ceilings of the temple are made of faced stone and brick.

In 1917 the building was attached to the Church portico of hewn stone, the architect of which was made by the famous Russian architect with Italian roots – Alexander Bernardazzi. It is noteworthy that under the portico is three graves. One has been given this honour became Dragoman Manuk – Bey, a high-ranking official and important person in the Ottoman Empire. According to some sources his real name Emanuel Marsan and he was an Armenian. There is a legend that he was able to escape from the Turks along with hundreds of other fellow believers, taking the Treasury of the Turkish vizier, and took refuge in Chisinau, which at the time was under the jurisdiction of Russia.

In 1885, has undergone extensive reconstruction of the temple, which significantly changed his appearance - built a new dome, the increased height of the towers and walls, completely replaced the roof and floor.

At all times of the Armenian Church of the Holy virgin was the center of spiritual and cultural life of the city. However, during the Soviet times the Church was closed and its building was given to the needs of the travel Agency. After the collapse of the USSR, the Church was returned to believers.

To date, the current Church, and although in need of restoration of the interior, looks solid and monumental, attracting the attention of numerous visitors with their grandeur.
