Cathedral of the Nativity is the main Orthodox temple of the city, monument of architecture of XIX century.
The beginning of the construction of the Cathedral, which was initiated by the Bessarabian Metropolitan Gavriil Banulescu-Bodoni, dates from the years 1930-1936. The author of the project was the architect A. Melnikov. The Cathedral was built in the style of Russian classicism and has four facades that abut a portico with six columns and pediments each. Near the temple was erected a four-level bell tower. The Church interior is decorated with magnificent frescoes.
During the Second world war, in June 1941, the Cathedral was badly damaged in the bombing, however, its restoration began a few months later. In 1962, the administration of the city was blown up the bell tower, and the building of the Cathedral was handed over at the exhibition center of the Ministry of culture of the USSR.
The Church building was returned to the believers only in the beginning of 90-ies, began the restoration and the rebuilding of the temple that lasted for six long years. In 1995, the President of Moldova issued a decree "on the acceleration of the restoration of the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ" and the following year the work was completed. Work was carried out on the restoration of the bell tower, installed and consecrated the cross of the Cathedral. The construction of the bell tower was finished in 1997, in appearance it differs from the original building. The interior decoration and furnishing of the Cathedral is today.
Today the Cathedral of the Nativity is the main and one of the most visited temples of the Kishinev diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.
