National Museum of Ethnography and natural history is the oldest and largest Museum in Moldova. It is located in the capital city of Chisinau, Kogalnichanu. The initiator of the Museum became Baron A. Stewart. Founded in October 1889 as the Museum of agriculture, it was located in another building. The institution has changed its name, but despite this, the main idea was to study the culture and nature of the historical region of Bessarabia remained unchanged.
Initially, all of the exposition was located in another building, because at that time there was no other free space to store them. To select the architect for agricultural, artisanal and Zoological Museum of the Bessarabian Zemstvo, was declared won a contest in which W. Ciganko. In 1905, the architect designed the new building for the Museum, whose construction ended in 1907, After that all the Museum exhibits were moved to a new place. The building was designed in pseudo-Mauritian style with a charming balcony and original window openings.
In our days the national Museum of Ethnography and natural history is an important scientific and cultural center of Bessarabia, known far outside the country.
The Museum consists of two halls. The first room is devoted to the flora and fauna of Moldova. He demonstrates to visitors of the Museum looked like flora and fauna, several thousand years ago and how it looks today. The second room introduces visitors to the history of the country, the population, their customs and culture. Here presents ancient objects of everyday life, national costumes, traditional interior house, a scene from a local wedding, and more.
The Museum displays a huge amount of geological, paleontological, archaeological, Zoological, entomological, ethnographic and numismatic collections. One of the main exhibits and the pride of the Museum is the skeleton of the dinotherium, the scientists found in 1966
Another feature of the Museum is located at it's Botanical garden, founded in 1906, It is the first Botanical garden in Bessarabia. The garden still exists today and continues to delight both locals and visitors alike for its plants and fresh air.
