The Puerta del Puente Photo: the Puerta del Puente

On the North Bank of the Guadalquivir river in Cordoba, close to the famous Roman bridge are the Puerta del Puente. The decision to build this gate was made with a view to expanding the entrance to the city, which was to serve as growth of trade in Cordoba. This gate served defensive role, because they were part of the fortress wall. Original guidance on the construction was entrusted to Francisco de Montalban, but after some time the development of the project and the construction work was headed by hernán Ruiz. In 1572 the construction of the Puerta del Puente was suspended because of funding difficulties and continued under the leadership of hernán Ruiz in 1576.
