The Church of our lady of Charity (La Merced) is close to Plaza de Armas, in the historic center of Cusco. Because of the earthquakes that occurred in this city, the sanctuary of Mercy Church was rebuilt and restored several times.

The first Church building was built in 1535 on land donated by the Marquis Francisco Pizarro. The present Church replaced the first temple, destroyed in 1650 by the earthquake. The main entrance of the Church, executed in the Renaissance style, is much less known than the side entrance, which is used now as a permanent. The construction of a new Church building took place in the period 1651-1659 year architects Martin de Torres and Sebastian Martinez. The temple is built in the neoclassical style, decorated with columns, multiple side altars and the image of our lady of Mercy in the Central part of the temple. Inside the crypt, located under the main altar of the Church, are the remains of Gonzalo Pizarro, and Francisco de Carvajal, Diego de Almagro the Elder (partner Pizarro and Almagro the Younger (son of Diego).

The building of the monastery Church of Mercy is considered a masterpiece. The whole design of the building is made of stone. Its semi-circular arches on small carved columns are repeated on the top tier, which adds lightness to the structure. For this reason, credited with developing the project the architect of the monastery of Torres, although some researchers believe that the monastery was built by Diego martínez de Oviedo, who belongs to another generation of architects.

The monastery building has a square shape with arched entrance, thick rectangular columns and numerous frescoes on the walls depicting the lives of saints. In the centre of the monastery has a beautiful flower garden. The monastery houses a permanent exhibition of the Museum of the temple of Mercy.

An annual celebration of the virgin Mary of Mercy, the patroness of this Church, is celebrated on 24 September, a beautiful procession on the streets of Cusco.
