Cistern in El Jadida is one of the most interesting and most visited tourist places in the city. Tanks are not far from the mosque at the entrance to walled Medina.
The history of this landmark began in 1741 Originally by the Portuguese had built a military Arsenal, and later it was remade into the hall of military collections. But it soon became clear that the long siege of the citadel without fresh water is indispensable. So after some time in the hall was placed in the reservoir, the so-called tank, where the Portuguese kept freshwater.
Despite all historical events, the tank was able to maintain its original appearance. The store was a square room with three halls with South, North and East sides and four towers. The great hall was created in 1741 in the Gothic style. Dark impression of this room brightens the small light hole made in the center of the roof, which is supported by 25 columns.
For tourists reservoir was opened in 1916, after the local shopkeeper, decided to expand his shop, broke through the wall and into the tank. The reservoir was filled with water only a few times, but damp here as it was until now.
Today Portuguese at the bottom of the tank is supported by a shallow layer of water, thus the light creates an amazing play of light reflection in the water. Mysterious atmosphere of the hall reservoir was inspired by renowned cult film Director Orson Welles to shoot in 1949 in the natural scenery a few scenes for his film "Othello".
