The building of the Church do Carmo in Faro in the Baroque style is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, the most important example of religious and artistic heritage of the Algarve and the example of wooden architecture in Portugal. The temple is located at Largo do Carmo. The Church also called Church of the third order of the blessed virgin Mary of mount Carmel or the Church of the Carmelites.

The Church was founded in 1713 by Bishop Antonio Pereira da Silva. The building was built on land which was purchased by the Bishop. The Grand opening of the Church took place in 1719. In the mid-eighteenth century, the Church had been repaired, the building was expanded, and the original facade of the Church was completely renovated. Renovation works of the Church were engaged in master Diogo gonçalves. The completed Church was completed in 1878, including the construction of the towers of the Church. Interior decoration of the Church was supervised by the sculptor Manuel Martins. In the decoration of Brazilian gold leaf, is particularly striking for its luxury the altar. The Church do Carmo is considered the most stunning attraction in the city because of the chapel ASUS, attached to the Church in 1826. This chapel is called the Chapel of Bones, in the walls and ceiling of this chapel built of the skulls and bones of monks of the Carmelite fathers.
