Bozhentsi is a village in the oblast of Gabrovo in the Northern part of the country, 8 km from Tryavna and 15 km from Gabrovo.

Bozhentsi was founded after the Turkish invasion in Tarnovo in the XVI century. Then from the capital of Bulgaria ran most of the residents who subsequently settled in distant and remote areas of the Balkans. Meanwhile, noblewoman named Bozhana grounded with his family in the place where later will be named after her village. Gradually the settlement grows and gets stronger. In the eighteenth century there was an important trade item. The main products were wool, animal hides, wax, and honey. Roman road led from Bozhentsi in Gabrovo, and on the other side of the village there was a mountain road which can be reached in the Tryavna.

The development of factory industry after the Liberation had a strong influence on the work of local artisans, and gradually the village went into decline. In 1962, carried out work on the restoration of some buildings in Bozhentsi, as well as the total restoration of the village. Since January 1964, the village is declared an architectural reserve.

As in the years of Ottoman rule among the settlers of Bozhentsi was a lot of rich and influential people, most of the houses in the village have two floors. The first is usually intended for trading and one for housing. Characterized by the presence of verandas, decorated stone slabs, carved wooden decorative elements, etc. All sidewalks in Bozhentsi paved with cobblestones.

An outstanding example of the Renaissance architecture is a three-aisled Basilica of the Prophet Elijah. The Church was built in 1839. Influential residents of the village received permission to build next to it a tower, despite the strict prohibition that existed in the years of Turkish slavery. Near the temple is the school, built in 1872. It is a massive structure, which was subsequently converted into a gallery. On the ground floor there is a library, and classrooms.

Bozhentsi is one of the hundred national tourist sites of Bulgaria and is popular with tourists. Each year, the reserve is visited by approximately 25 thousand people.
