The Museum of education in Gabrovo opened in 1973 and is engaged in the search, collection, study and storage of written and physical monuments of education of Bulgaria. Also the Museum staff are keen to show the country's development from its origins to the present. There is a Museum in the East of the city, in the historic school building, which was built in 1873.
The Museum exposition is located in five halls, which are divided thematically: from the Bulgarian education in the ninth century and ending with the present. The total area of the Museum – 435 sq. m.
The first room introduces visitors to the history of Bulgarian education, shows evidence of the first written language, which began to appear in the ninth century. This was due to the fact that in the year 886 Prince Boris were warmly greeted by the three disciples of Cyril and Methodius – Naum, Angelarius and Clement. Prince has created favourable conditions for them in which they can freely engage in literary and educational activities. The exposition of the first hall is completed in 1835, the Second hall is dedicated to the development of Bulgarian education in the period of National Revival – from 1835 to 1878. It is known that in August 1835, the Neofit Rilski in Gabrovo was opened the first secular school.
The third and fourth halls of the Museum cover the history of education in the country, starting from the Bulgarian school era of liberation from the Turkish yoke and to the end of the twentieth century. In the fifth hall is the renovated classrooms from each school different eras.
In the Museum, among other things, holds the collection of books from the personal library of V. Aprilov relating to different periods – from the Renaissance to the present day. The Museum also organized a special library, which has more than 28 thousand volumes. The Museum collection consists of more than 60 thousand archival units.
