The house of humor and satire is unique and in fact the only Museum dedicated to humour. Opened in Gabrovo in 1972 to April fool's Day – April 1.
We can say that this Museum continues and develops the role of Gabrovo folk humor, its traditional carnival. After all, Gabrovo is the recognized capital of the Bulgarian humor. In unison it sounds motto, coined by the Museum staff: "the World survived because it was able to laugh! "
On the spot where now stands the building of the House of humour and satire, first housed a tannery. The house of humor and satire was built after the plant was demolished. The total area of the Museum – 8 thousand square meters, the area is home to 10 exhibition halls. Thus, the House of humor and satire can be attributed to one of the largest museums in Bulgaria.
Permanent exhibition – "the Roots of humor in Gabrovo", which presents a variety of exhibits, including the famous local anecdotes with illustrations by Boris Dimovski, a famous cartoonist. From here begins the acquaintance with the Museum exhibits.
In front of the entrance to the exhibition all visitors are greeted tailless black cat – a symbol of Gabrovo. According to one of the local jokes, Gabrovo once cut the cats tails, so they rather were held in an open door, thereby saving heat in frosty time of year. But of course, this is nothing more than a joke – not a single inhabitant of the city and thought is not allowed to deprive your pet of the tail.
Another humorous hint of excessive frugality of Gabrovo in the form of a picture is the perfect place in the Museum. This brush work For Nedelcheva – the egg of large size with a tap, which, incidentally, is also another symbol of the city. The painting alludes to the fact that local Housewives on weekdays do not use the whole egg for the filling dinners, on holidays only.
The Museum has a specially equipped children's room, where the kids can freely play and touch the exhibits. Also in the House of humor and satire is a unique "Bank jokes" where to leave your favorite anecdote or joke can be anyone.
Every year on April 1 the Museum hosts special holiday program.
