The Church of the Santissima trinità, also known as the Montagna Spaccata, was erected in the 11th century over a cleft in a rocky cliff at the Western end of Monte Orlando in Gaeta. According to the legend, this cleft, running to the Turkish Grotto Grotta del Turco appeared in the day of Christ's death, when split many mountains around the world. The second name of the Church of Montagna spaccata – translated from Italian and means "Split Mountain".

Along the staircase that leads into the very bosom of the mountains, over a narrow crack on the right you can see the Latin couplet, and the side – so-called "Hand of the Turk" in the form of a human hand (five fingers imprinted in the rock). According to the legend, it was born at that moment when one unbeliever Turkish sailor, not believing in the story of the origin of the Montagna spaccata, leaned against a rock, which miraculously suddenly became loose and I had left the imprint of his hands.

In the Church of the Santissima trinità prayed numerous pontiffs, among whom was Pope Pius IX, bishops and saints, including Bernardino da Siena, Ignatius of Loyola, Leonardo da Porto Maurizio, Saint Paul of the cross, the Gaspar del Buffalo and St. Filippo Neri. They say that last even lived in one of the caves of Montagna spaccata, where preserved stone bed, now known as the "Lodge of St. Philip Neri.

In 1434, the year with the top two rocky cliffs, which gave the name to the place (Split Mountain), separated the huge stone that dropped down and got stuck between two walls of the cleft. It was built a small chapel dedicated to the Crucifixion, from the site which you can admire a breathtaking view. Not far from the chapel is very Bed of Philip Neri.

The current appearance of the Church of the Santissima trinità is the result of the restoration in the 19th century. To the left of the Church is of Turkish descent to the Grotto, and there is a Roman cistern from the Villa of Lucius Strap (mausoleum of the last stands nearby). To the right begins a covered corridor, the walls of which are lined with ceramics part you can see the stations of the Cross. At the end of the corridor is a staircase that leads to the Central cleft. There is the "Hand of the Turk".

Today, the Church of the Santissima trinità is the missionaries of the Pontifical Institute for foreign missions.
