State drama theatre of the city of Vorkuta was created in 1943. The theatre has a unique history of its formation, because it was created in the camp, intended for political prisoners during the great Patriotic war, the year before, when Vorkuta became known as the city. Previously Vorkuta was only a village, most of whom were prisoners and convicts. In this place at the end of the 1930s, there was the construction of one of the largest camps of the Gulag called "Vorkuta".

Among the camp prisoners were quite a large number of professional musicians, singers, actors, writers and artists. One of the most respected people Mordvinov was Boris Abramovich – the Honoured artist of the Republic of Komi, as well as former chief Director of the Bolshoi theater in Moscow and Professor of the Moscow Conservatory. Mordvinov was the Director of the famous Opera "Life of Tsar" or better known as "Ivan Susanin". Once the permission to create theatre was given, he immediately began work on the incarnation. As a place for rehearsals and productions was selected by the local club or the House of culture of miners.

October 1, 1943, the long-awaited opening of Vorkuta theatre by staging the operetta under the name "Silva" author Imre Kalman. In the future, the operetta "survived" more than a hundred productions than forever left a mark in the life of the theatre. Established theatre became a second life for the prisoners, because even in detention, creative people have been able to prove itself, that has brought a lot of joy to viewers.
