Albaicín is the oldest district of Granada, situated on a hillside, at the foot of which a multitude of waters of the picturesque river with the beautiful name Darro.

Albaicín is an architectural heritage of Moorish Spain. Its narrow winding streets, the layout and architecture of the remaining buildings take us back in the times of prosperity of Muslim culture which was prevalent in the period of settlement of this area by the Moors. It is as a "store of folk architecture of the Moors" Albaicín was inscribed on the world heritage list of UNESCO.

To date, there remained many Moorish dwellings, such as houses, surrounded by green gardens, which here is called "Carmen". Also preserved ancient baths of the times of the 11th-century, decorated with beautiful domes and capitals works of the ancient masters. Most churches today in the Albaicín, were built on the sites of ancient mosques. Most often, the mosque was destroyed, and remained only the minaret that was converted into a bell tower. Such churches include the Church of San josé, built on the site of a Muslim mosque from the 11th century, and the Church of San Juan de Los Reject in the Gothic style, which serves as a bell tower, a former minaret belonging to the 13th century.

Once Albaicín was the residence of the rulers of Granada. In the 14th century Albaicín became the center of the prosperity of trade and crafts. It produced jewelry and weapons, products of silk and brocade, dishes and other household items. On the modern streets of the Albaicín still find plenty of shops, shops and stalls.
