The Benedictine monastery of Sacromonte Photo: the Benedictine monastery of Sacromonte

The Benedictine monastery of Sacromonte is located three kilometres North-East of Granada, practically on top of the mountain of Sacromonte, the title of which translates as "sacred mountain". Once in the caves, located on the slopes of this mountain, the Gypsies lived. In 1595 on this site were found the relics of the disciples of the Apostle James, and is made of lead plates, where in Arabic have been described the martyrdom of the saints Cecilio, Tisiphone and Visio. Described is also the place where the martyrs were tortured – the chapel of the Holy sepulchre, which has since become a Mecca for pilgrims.

In 1598, was erected a separate building for storage of relics, and in 1600 by the Jesuit architect Pedro Sanchez there was the construction of the monastery. The customer was made by the Archbishop of Granada, Pedro de Castro Cabeza de Vaca, after whose death, unfortunately, construction was halted. At that time, were rebuilt only a patio, one of the aisles and the Church. The Church is remarkable for the beauty and richness of decoration and decor.

In the main building of the monastery Archbishop Pedro de Castro Cabeza de Vaca managed to found a school where he taught law, theology and philosophy, and became one of the first private schools in Europe.

In the library, located in the building of the monastery, kept the original drawings and plans of buildings created by Pedro Sanchez. In 1711 by Archbishop don Martin Escargot the construction of the monastery was continued. In the early 20th century were built on the premises that was occupied by the Institute and University.

The monastery also houses a Museum, where are found the lead plates, as well as ancient manuscripts, books, coins, tapestries and paintings by famous artists of Spain.
