The ancient Vratislav is located 40 km South-West of Bydgoszcz in the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship, near the village of Vratislav, home to 320 residents.

As a result of the strong fall of the water level in the lake Vratislav in 1933, archaeologists discovered traces of an ancient settlement. Excavations started in 1934 specialists Rajewski and Kostrzewski and continued until the outbreak of the Second world war. In the postwar years, the works were resumed. Due to the particular composition of the sludge in the area of construction and household items are well preserved. Archaeological excavations in Vratislav wore innovative and marked the beginning of experimental archaeology. During these works for the first time in Poland was applied documentary photography from the air.

Studies have shown that the settlement dates back to around 550 BC it was Also found that the area is left in the Iron age. The settlement had about 11 streets a width of 2. 5 meters and 106 houses that were close to each other. The settlement was enclosed by a high wooden fence and a shaft width of about 3 meters and a length of 640 meters. It is believed that the settlement could live from 800 to 1000 people. During the works was found to more than 6 million different items, most of which indicate that the population was engaged in cattle breeding and agriculture. The most interesting findings can be attributed utensils, looms and weapons for hunting and fishing.

Today the settlement Vratislav is a Museum where you can see recreations of the streets and houses, get acquainted with the lifestyle of the ancient inhabitants. Every September there is the archaeological festival.
