Portaria Photo: Portaria

The Greek village of Portaria is one of the most picturesque and interesting settlements in Vesalii. Portaria is located at an altitude of 650 m above sea level on the picturesque slopes of mount Pelion, about 13 km from the city of Volos (the capital of the Prefecture of MAGNISIA). It is ideal for lovers of quiet and moderate rest.

Assuming its current name received from Portaria founded here in the 13th century Church of Panagia Portariá, around which, in fact, was constructed settlement. Today, the ancient temple with well-preserved magnificent frescoes and unique icons is one of the main historic attractions of the city.

During the reign of the Ottoman Empire Portaria has grown rapidly, has increased significantly and the population. Already in the 18th century Portaria has developed into an important industrial and commercial center of the region. Products of silk produced here, were known far beyond the borders of modern Greece. The wealth and prosperity of the city is beautifully expressed in the magnificent old mansions built during that period, and perfectly preserved.

Despite the fact that over the last decade Portaria has become a very popular tourist destination, here are preserved the charming atmosphere of an authentic Greek village with traditional architecture of the region (for new buildings are also designed in the same style). Today Portaria is a beautifully restored old mansions (some of them converted into hotels and resorts), cobbled streets, numerous fountains and lots of greenery. A popular place for residents of Portaria and its guests, of course, the main square, around which is centered a large part of cozy restaurants and cafes tucked away in the shade of plane trees. On the square are the ruins of the “Mega Theoksenia” (1898-1944) – one of the most luxurious hotels in the Balkan region, which, unfortunately, was destroyed during the Second world war.

Local attractions also worthy of mention are the Church of St. Nicholas (1856) and the Byzantine monastery of St. John, located on the way to Makrinitsa.

Definitely worth a stroll through the picturesque surroundings Portarli and walk along the famous "path of the centaurs".
