Mount Hakodate is one of the sights of the city of Hakodate, located in the southern part of Hokkaido. On the hillside is almost the entire Central part of the city. And to be on top of it, you need to take the bus or use the cable car lower station which is located right in the city centre, in the street of Motomachi.
The mountain is 334 meters, its slopes covered with forest in Japan, frankly speaking, the mountains are more prominent. However, with Hakodate in clear weather, a beautiful view of the city. Moreover, night panorama of the city is among the three most prominent nocturnal species along with species of Nagasaki from mount inasa and the city of Kobe from mount Rokko. On top of a mountain Observatory is located, a café and a restaurant and souvenir shops.
On the slopes of mount Hakodate is preserved since the Meiji so-called "Western quarter", which was built in the spirit of the Wild West. Nearby is the Russian Orthodox Church, built in 1862 and renovated in 1917.
The city of Hakodate, which was founded in the mid-fifteenth century, for many years served as the Western gateway to Japan, so on its territory you can see traces of the presence of different cultural traditions – European, Russian, American, Chinese, but the buildings in the traditional Japanese style here is not so much. Many of the foreigners who lived in Hakodate, were buried in the cemetery, also located on the slopes of the eponymous mountain. In the Russian part of the cemetery was erected six-foot memorial cross made of white stone. A sample was taken of the Novgorod memorial cross of XI-XII centuries. In the cemetery were buried Russian diplomats, sailors and their family members, including spouse of the first head of the Russian diplomatic mission of Joseph Hoshkevich.
