Lion square is the heart of the city of Heraklion. Officially it is called "the Area of Eleftherios Venizelos" in honor of the famous Greek politics, but this name has not caught on among local residents. Lion square is the liveliest and one of the most important parts of the city, a place full of life 24 hours a day.

The highlight of the square is the famous Venetian morozini fountain, built in the 17th century. Because in Heraklion had no sources, residents used wells and rainwater. The construction of this fountain has allowed to solve the problem of providing the city with drinking water (up to 1000 barrels per day). The water supply was organized in 15-km aqueduct from the source in the mountains of the Town. The work lasted 14 months and 25 April 1628, the day of St. Mark (the patron Saint of Venice), the fountain was opened.

Pool fountain stands on a round base and has the shape of a flower of eight petals. In the center of the pedestal sit four marble lions, their mouths water flows. Previously at the top of the fountain was placed a marble statue of Poseidon with a Trident (a masterpiece by a local artist), but she, unfortunately, has not survived to our days. Pool fountain decorated with sculptures with scenes from Greek mythology. Once on the site of the fountain was a Roman sculpture of Neptune.

Historical sources claim that during the Arab domination (9th-10th century) Lion square was the largest slave market in the Eastern Mediterranean. In the Byzantine period (10th-13th century) there was the residence of the Byzantine Governor of Heraklion. In the 13-17th centuries on the square is the Palazzo Ducale, where the Venetian Duke and his two counselors sealed the fate of Heraklion and its inhabitants. Opposite the Palace used to be granary. After the conquest by the Turks of the island in the "Palazzo Ducale" is the vizier and his retinue.

Today, the square there are many cafes and restaurants where you can relax. While the many shops and souvenir shops will delight guests with interesting purchases.
