On top of a hill in Herceg Novi is the fortress Spanjola. This strengthening is opposite the entrance to the Bay, directly above the city. It was built by the Turks in the XV-XVI centuries with moderate participation of the Spanish side, briefly seized the fortress in 1538-1539, And thanks to last it got its name, Spagnola, which translated means "fortress of the upper town".
Without reliable guidance to find the way here is difficult, as leading to the castle itself only narrow streets and stairs in 1000 steps. But climbing up on them, you will see a beautiful panorama of the city and Bay. The fortress outside looks very impressive, though inside her almost nothing is preserved.
Historical evidence suggests that Charles V, the Spanish king who was at war with Turkey in the 16th century, captured Herceg Novi and erected over it the first fortress called "castle of Charles V". The convenient location of the city allowed them to control the local neighborhood. But in the course of fierce fighting, she passed into the hands of the Turks, who destroyed the Fort and built on its new Foundation. However, they were not the sole owners of the castle for all time of its existence.
In the late 17th century came under the dominion of Venice, and at 19, after alternating transition to the Russians, the French, the fortress, in the end, was ceded to the Austro-Hungary together with the city. Further, it was a part of was created after the first world war the Kingdom of Slovenes, Serbs and Croats. Today she owns Montenegro, but, like many other fortresses of that country, it is in a derelict state.
The layout of the fortress Spanjola is a square with round bastions at the corners. At the time she was completely Autonomous, as had my own bakery, various sources of water and everything necessary for the sustenance of a small town. With two other fortresses Herceg Novi fortress Spanjola were joined by an underground tunnel that was strategically necessary for the defense of the city.
