The Church of the Transfiguration in Irkutsk is one of the attractions of the city and one of the oldest Orthodox churches of the region. It is located in the right-Bank district of Irkutsk in the alley Volkonsky.
The Church was founded in 1795 with funds donated Irkutsk merchants - Stefan Ivan Ignatiev, and Dry, and who became the main initiators of the construction of the Church. It is assumed that the author of the project of the temple was a famous Irkutsk architect Anton Losev. As construction of the Church is still unknown, but we can assume that without the participation of craftsmen and Smiths Rabochegostola settlement here is clearly not done.
Right, merged aisle of the Church was consecrated in August 1798. Then was founded the new Transfiguration parish.
The solemn consecration of the main Church of the Transfiguration was held in August 1811 the temple wall, the sacristy and the porch on the North side of the Church, as well as a tin roof, which was delivered instead of the original wooden one, was built in 1849 with funds donated an honorary citizen of Irkutsk, a state Councilor E. A. Kuznetsov. Between 1845 and 1855, in the parish of the Transfiguration Church lived the Decembrists P. S. troubetzkoy and S. G. Volkonsky. In this Church, married the son of the Decembrist Mikhail Kuchelbecker and daughter Holly - Elena.
According to the archives, in October 1937, the parish Church of the Transfiguration was the largest of the three existing Orthodox churches of Irkutsk. He was averaging 1505 parishioners. To all this, the Church was the center of education, as there was a parochial school, and opposite was Orphan's house E. Medvedkovo.
In the Soviet years the Church building housed the library and the archive. Outside the Church lost two lateral extensions. Worship in the Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration was resumed only in 2000.
