Kazan national research technical University named after A. N. Tupolev is located in the center of Kazan, near the Kazan Kremlin. The main building of KAZAN. A. N. Tupolev is a former First Imperial school.

Landowner Molotov ordered the architect F. Yemelyanov project two-story, residential building. The building was built in 1789. Later the building was purchased by the city authorities. In 1932 the building of the former Imperial gymnasium was transferred to the Kazan aviation Institute.

The first time KAI had two compartments: aerodynamic and aircraft. In 1934 KAI opened the aircraft Department, on the basis of these two offices. During the great Patriotic war in KAI evacuees were transferred units and laboratories of several well-known institutes of the USSR. During this period worked in KAI leading scientists of the country under the leadership of academician, the future President of the USSR Academy of Sciences M. V. Keldysh.
